US Halts Anthropic’s Top AI Models in Surprise National Security Move
The Biden administration forced Anthropic to disable its two most advanced AI models—Fable 5 and Mythos 5—worldwide on June 12 via an export control letter. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick cited undisclosed national security concerns after a third party allegedly jailbroken Mythos. Anthropic complied within hours, cutting off all foreign access including its own employees.
While framed as an AI governance story, the abrupt shutdown carries implications for crypto markets. These weren’t conversational models but specialized tools reportedly capable of autonomously exploiting smart contract vulnerabilities. Their removal coincides with growing institutional adoption of AI-audited DeFi protocols.
The timing suggests regulators are preemptively neutralizing perceived threats to financial infrastructure. Market reactions remain muted, but the incident establishes a precedent: frontier AI now falls under the same export controls as semiconductor technology.
